60s makeup.

Just a post about inspiring makeup.

I'm really into the 60s style. I love the whole aesthetic of it, including makeup! Thinking of that I decided to give it a try and make a look inspired by it.

The 60s was a decade when makeup was really about the eyes. The skin was pale and the lips were soft. Mostly they would wear translucid powders, soft-pink blushes and glossy pale lips.

All that to keep the focus on the eyes. They were extremely dramatic. Big and bold lashes, a lot of eyeliner and fake bottom lashes. Eyeliner would be the most important makeup product, but eye-cats were to 1950 for those 60s women! So that look was left behind.

Instead, they would use black eyeliner to literally draw the crease, create fake bottom eyelashes and, sometimes discreet wings. White eyeliner/eyeshadow on the water line and inner corners was used to open and brighten the eyes.

Softer looks were often used as well, of course. There were 3 looks in the 60s, and they were mod, hippie and classic.

The most common eyeshadow colours were green, gray, white and pale blue, as it would be applied all over the lid. And they would always went with big, dramatic lashes.

Here you can watch an amazing legit 60s makeup tutorial!

And here you have some nice cute makeup propaganda from that time:

I took them from this website, there you can find other pictures and more info.

The reason why makeup changed so much from the 50s is the influence of movie stars, models and makeup companies. In 1963 the movie Cleopatra, staring Elizabeth Taylor, was released and rapidly became a major success. Everyone was astonished by Taylor's beauty, and how it was highlighted by her (for those days) unusual makeup. Then, the film turned into a inspiration for girls to start focusing on their eyes and using more eyeliner.

The models Jean Shrimpton and Twiggy also performed great influence to spread this new look. They were modelling for a British makeup brand called 'Yardley of London', and were often seen wearing liner.

Mary Quant played a important part during that transition as well. She released a great line of affordable cosmetics, focusing on contoured cheeks and highlighters. She was the one that influenced the use of makeup brushes to apply eyeliner and blush, so you could achieve Twiggy's look. Also, her products came with leaflets that instructed the positions for the blush shading and highlighting. That type of information wasn't easy to get if you had little money during that time, so making it accessible was a brilliant way to popularize this new look.

Revlon, Helena Rubenstein, Maybelline, Rimmel and Avon were famous brands during that time. And important brands like Mary Kay Inc. and Cover Girl were founded in 1963.

Now for the look I created, I just followed these simple rules: dramatic lashes, white eyeshadow and lots of eyeliner :P

Just couldn't help blending it a little bit hahahaha, that's why you can see a bit of brown eyeshadow, but not much, as the eyes are supposed to take a rounder shape.

So what do you think? Do you like the 60s aesthetic?
